Day 5 - Franz Joseph to Fox Glacier

Day 5 - Franz Joseph to Fox Glacier

on: January 21st, 2013

Wednesday 18th July 2012 - Rian Cope

We tried to make an effort to wake up earlier this morning as there was much to do. we needed to visit the Franz Joseph Glacier, pick up supplies and money and tackle a 3 peak mountain range for 23kms. After a well deserved was rest and laundry completed we had a hearty breakfast and cycled 4 kms to the car-park of the entrance to the Glacier. We walked to Peters Pool, a perfect mirror image (on a clear day) of the Glacier. A photographers dream. At about 11am, we headed off to tackle the range. I was very pleased with myself as I tackled the 12% gradient on a fully loaded touring bike. I am managing harder and greater distances than ever before.

I feel strong and fit. We rolled into Fox Glacier at about 3pm and found accommodation. I was now more determined to camp more and not eat out. Be more self sufficient. Dylan's knee is till acting up and becoming a little bit of a concern. We decided to rest for the day tomorrow where we will do a little Heli-Tour and walk to the Glacier and visit Matherson Lake Another perfect reflection). I will need to fix a few things on my bike - maintenance.

I have now got food to last me a few days camping. We have a big day planned for Friday where we plan on cycling 120kms to Haast to make up our rest day. I’ve been thinking about the week ahead with some tough terrain tackle into Wanaka and Queenstown. Very exciting. I want to do more adventures and am already planning more in my head. Spoke to Jen and find it hard to be away from her. I feel sometimes a little selfish going on this trip and leaving her behind. I really appreciate her support for this trip and Im sure the many more ahead.
